Our History and Looking Forwards
It was 2006 when Ann Marie and Mindy went on their first trip to Kenya after a fund raiser they had organized in Hong Kong. From Nairobi to Kimalewa and armed with suitcases of clothes, toys and books, they distributed them to children, orphans and the disadvantaged families they met as they traveled. Once in Kimalewa, they visited the Quaker Secondary School there, met the children whose school fees they had raised and handed them to their head teacher.
And although it sounds like a rather simplistic journey so far, this was a life changing trip for the girls. They witnessed first hand how a lack of education perpetuates poverty leaving children with no sustainable future. They saw how the lack of health education meant that the AIDS epidemic had become prevalent and was wide spread, leaving many children orphaned.
Such an impression was made that after this trip, Ann Marie and Mindy decided to create and register their charity naming it LinKenya as they fund-raised solely for the disadvantaged children and families in Kenya.
However by 2014, the charity was expanding as the girls were adding new countries to their fundraising endeavors. Subsequently, the charity’s name was changed to Link Universal so as to be inclusive of a worldwide demographic.
At the time of writing, the girls have hosted a number of fundraising events in both the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, where Ann Marie and Mindy reside respectively. They have also joined forces with other charities and establishments in an effort to make a difference to the world in which we live.
From their trip to Kenya in 2006 to the present day, both girls have been on a personal journey of growth as the charity has dictated their life paths. Although she acknowledges she is not perfect, Ann Marie has always had faith in God and was recently baptized acknowledging this to be one of the best days of her life. She sees the UK arm of Link Universal, as her way to give back to a hurt and damaged world. She takes her strength from the wisdom found in Proverbs 31 8-9 which declares……..
‘speak up for those who can not speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy’
Accordingly, she sees Link Universal as a charity that heeds these words with a goal to help whenever and wherever possible.
